FIRST ANNUAL COMMUNITY 5K FUNDRAISER

Saturday May 15, 2021

You and your family are invited to join us for our first-ever Community 5K on Saturday May 15th!

Enjoy a day of being active with your family right here in East Central, and help us raise money to put up a basketball goal for the community! Walk, run, or push a stroller with your kids, to join your neighbors in supporting a great cause. Registration for the event is $20 and includes a t-shirt and medal. Children under 8 years old are welcome to participate for free. (Please note that only registered participants will receive race gear.)  Race time slots are available from 9am-1pm in order to promote social distancing. You will see these options once you click the registration link below. You may also sponsor a runner/walker or request a sponsored slot for yourself. Please note that if you register after April 22nd, you may not receive a t-shirt and medal because of printing time.

Here's how you can get involved:

1.) Run or walk as a race participant. Click the link here to register.

2.) Sponsor a runner/walker. Click the link here to make a donation.

3.) Volunteer. Click here to request a volunteer slot. Please note that signing up as a volunteer is the first step and that we will contact you to request that you fill out a very simple background check form. This is to assure the safety of all families participating in this event. If you would like to bring a group of volunteers, please contact us to find out what kinds of volunteer needs we will have!

*NOTE: If you would like to run/walk in the event but are not in the financial position to pay for registration, please email us at shepherdshandfw@gmail.com! If we have a sponsored running/walking slot, we would love to have you join us!

Do you represent a local business or organization that loves this community? Contact us to learn about what a donation to this effort could mean for the publicity of your company while supporting a grass-roots local initiative! Corporate/organizational sponsorship perks and incentives will be listed here soon!

Please reach out via email if you have any questions! We can't wait to have you join us.

NEXT FAIR: SATURDAY APRIL 17TH FROM 11AM-2PM

Now, more than ever, many families in our community are experiencing diaper need. This simple resource can be a great support to families with small children.

Several Saturdays throughout the year we host our Family Health Fair and Diaper Giveaway events, with our next one being on Saturday April 17th from 11am-2pm. We are so thankful for the many local health agencies who shared resources for us to distribute. The following organizations have partnered with us at past events:

Amani Family Services

Mental Health America of Northeast Indiana

Parkview Health Community Health

Matthew 25 Health and Care

St. Joseph Community Health Foundation

Tobacco Free Indiana

Lutheran Social Services of Indiana

LSSI Works

Neighborhood Health

A Hope Center

Familia Dental

Walgreens

Brightpoint

We are also thankful to the following partners who have provided education, served as exhibitors or volunteers, and have hosted diaper drives to make our growing Diaper Bank Project possible:

Volunteer nurses who test blood pressure and blood sugar

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority- Eta Upsilon Chapter

Health Visions Midwest

Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center

General Motors African Ancestry Network and Women's Committee

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church

Emmaus Lutheran Church

Concordia Theological Seminary Faculty

LCMS Life Ministry

Northeast Indiana Right to Life

Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church

At future events, we also plan to make kids' books, a coloring station, free diapers, and healthy snacks available to those who attend.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Become a diaper bank partner!

Donate a package of diapers in any size, or host a diaper drive at your church or workplace! Contact us for publicity information and to coordinate a day for drop off. If you would like to volunteer your time the week before the fair to set-up and re-pack diaper donations, contact us!

We need your partnership! Thanks to the generosity of so many local individuals and groups, we are running out of space to store and sort all these diapers. Your monetary donation to our work will also allow us to expand our Diaper Bank within our facility to allow for more diaper storage. This means that we will be able to serve and support even more families! Contact us if you have any questions about this effort.

THE HOMEWORK CLUB

Tuesdays from 3-5 pm

*When FWCS is in session

For students in grades 2-8

NOTE: No Homework Club on April 6th (Spring Break). The last club day for the school year will be on May 11th.

Whether it's math, reading, spelling, or Spanish, our volunteers are prepared to help students with a variety of homework. Specialized, one-on-one help is available.  We also offer snacks and a brief Christ-centered devotion. When students finish their homework, we also play games or do fun group learning activities. Students are welcome to sign up and come, whether or not they need tutoring in a specific subject. Contact us to sign up your student or to ask any questions you may have! Our goal is to support the students who need it the most, so let us know what we can do to help your student do his or her very best.

A limited number of computers are available to students for homework purposes. We do ask that students and parents wear face masks when entering and interacting in our facility. If your students needs a mask, one will be provided.

At the moment, our Homework Club meets just once a week. If your student needs additional help, please let us help connect you to further tutoring resources on other days of the week!

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY
SUNDAY MAY 2, 2021

Together we can make our neighborhood even more beautiful!

We love our community, and we hope you do too! We invite you to join us for our clean-up events. Something as simple as cleaning up litter, and doing it together, can encourage pride and care for our community. This spring we are partnering with Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church to beautify the community by planting flowers and cleaning up litter. The more hands we have on deck, the more we will be able to accomplish! We will meet after the 9:30 am worship service at Shepherd of the City to start working, and invite you to join us. Gloves, supplies, water, and a light lunch will be provided. Please contact us to let us know you'll be here so that we can make sure to have enough food and supplies.

COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER

Sunday before Thanksgiving 2021

THANK YOU to our 25 volunteer cooks and 26 servers who made our COVID-friendly 2020 Community Thanksgiving Dinner possible! We could not have served 250+ meals without the help and participation of so many in our Fort Wayne community.

We are collecting canned corn, pumpkin, green beans, and instant potatoes and stuffing. If you would like to contribute items, or make a donation to the pantry item collection, please get in touch with us to coordinate a drop-off time.

If you would like to volunteer at this event in the future, please let us know as well!
